This article talks about how different types of wind can affect surfing. Sometimes you feel like you’re getting better at surfing, but then the next day it feels like you’re back to square one. But don’t worry, it’s not always your fault. Things like the wind, waves, and tide can make a big difference.

There are different kinds of wind: offshore, onshore, cross-shore, and side shore. Offshore wind is the best for surfing because it makes the waves smooth and clean. Onshore wind, on the other hand, makes things harder because it creates messy waves. Cross-shore wind can be bad or good, depending on how it hits the waves. Side shore wind blows parallel to the coast and affects the shape of the waves.

To know what the wind is doing, you can look at flags or trees. If you’re not sure, ask someone who knows more about surfing.

The wind not only affects the waves but also how easy it is to surf. Strong winds can make it harder to catch waves and keep your balance. In places like Mentawai, where there are consistent surf conditions, offshore winds are more common during the dry season from April to October. But even during the wet season, there are still good waves to catch.

In the end, whether you’re a beginner or experienced, you can have a good time surfing no matter the wind conditions, especially with the help of professionals at surf resorts like HT’s.

I am a surfer but have never been to any surf school. I believe in self-learning. I am native to Mentawai Islands, a beautiful and uncrowded surf destination.
